Sovana: a timeless place
Sovana welcomes its visitors with over three thousand years of history. An ancient Etruscan city and evocative medieval village, it still preserves the charm of its origins: the Etruscan necropolis, ancient monuments, and the majestic 11th-century Romanesque cathedral tell a remarkable past, still visible in every corner of the town.
Walking through its cobbled streets, tuff stone houses, and quiet squares, you can feel an atmosphere suspended in time. Around the village, the gentle Maremma landscape unfolds into rolling hills, olive groves, and woodlands that stretch as far as the slopes of Mount Amiata.
In this setting of rare beauty stands Sovana Hotel & Resort, created from a beautifully restored historic farmhouse. Surrounded by greenery and timeless Tuscan countryside views, it offers unique glimpses of the cathedral and the lands that preserve the memory of this corner of Tuscany.
The Etruscan necropolis of Sovana, located west of the village centre, is the most important in the Maremma region. It is renowned for the Tombs of Ildebranda, Pola, and the Siren, with the depiction of Scylla (from which another of our properties takes its name), as well as recently discovered winged demons.
The Vie Cave are part of the ancient Etruscan road network, carved into tuff stone. These narrow but very deep (up to 20 metres) trenches were created to overcome the steep differences in elevation between the plateau and the riverbeds of the area.
